Akbar Birbal and A Work of Art

Adapted from an Indian folklore

Dr. Mala Sinha

Akbar was strolling with some of his courtiers in the royal gardens which were filled with exquisite flowers.

A court poet drew the emperor’s attention to a particular flower and exclaimed: “How beautiful is this flower ! Man can never make something so beautiful and exquisite.”

The emperor agreed, but much to his irritation he heard Birbal say “ Man can produce sometimes, far more beautiful things “ Akbar reprimanded Birbal and all the courtiers who were there enjoyed Birbal’s discomfiture. Birbal was hurt and was determined to prove his point.

Do you agree with Birbal or Akbar ?

A few days later a master craftsman came to Akbar’s court and gifted him with an exquisite marble carving of a bouquet of flowers .

The emperor was very impressed and gave the artist one thousand gold coins. Just then a little boy came with a beautiful bunch of roses and gave them to the emperor. Akbar gave the boy a silver coin.

Birbal who was standing near Akbar pointed : “ So the man made carving of flowers is more beautiful than real flowers .” The emperor realized Birbal was right once again.

Why is a work of art that portrays a real thing more valuable than the real thing?

5 StarThe price of any aesthetically appeasing thing depends on it's existence and beauty.Eventhough flowers are very beautiful, they can be grown by anyone,so they can exist anywhere. But capturing the beauty is far more difficult thing and it costs more because it is rare in it's existence. -tejdhan13@gmail.com

4 StarTheman made things are expensive because very few people can master this art and produce a unique thing. While Almighty has given all beutiful things in abundance and we do not appreciate them because we have taken the anture for granted. If we imagine, for a second, that there are only 100 roses left on this earth then we will certainly prize them differently. The message for me is to appreciate what is given to us and do not take narure for granted. yaseenrajabali@gmail.com
5 StarBeautiful things are made attractive by work of art
5 Starman cannot give reward or award to god.all the natural things that occur in this world is done by the greatest craftman ,i.e. HIM.so it the otherway around that our capacity is so less that we whether a pauper or an emperor can only give reward to a human creation not a god's creation.
3 StarWork of art is limited and not everybody can create it, however things like roses are in abundance. I am sure if you create a picture of GOLD, it will not be as expensive as original goal.... so the statement as above is not always true
5 Starits show the emotions, dedication & love of one person toward his job which is also gifted by god to that person... vipan.kak@gmail.com

5 StarArt = Real things + Artist's imagination
5 StarThe reward was not a reflection fo the beauty of the things flowers ... it was in line with the effort put in. The boy plucked the roses and got them to Akbar. The creator was God Almighty and even Akbar would not be able to 'compensate' HIM for the creation. The artificial flowers however created by the craftsman was a work of art, of exquisite detail and wonderful skill. The reward was to recognise the skill that the craftsman put in to 'copy' the original created by GOD. It does not corelate with a situation where an artist has created a copy of lets say Mona Lisa. The Original created by a human being is definately more valuable than the copy. - HemantkumarJain@gmail.com
5 StarWork of art is the product of imagination, nothing can limit an artist 's imagination.Man is god's creation, hence he can go and is bound to go far beyond his creator, just like how our kids excel more than us!

5 StarA work of art carries wit it a tradition, a legend which improves and develops and changes in time. Nature has stayed unchaged through times, it is the ability of man that changes things even in nature.
