Communication & Communication

Dr. Mala Sinha

Mother, child, and nature are in communion.

Babies laugh, smile, respond, and reach out to the mother for no special reason, and mothers coo, cuddle and stroke babies just for love. Birds spontaneously chirp, animals nuzzle and make signs to each other, and flowers with their fragrance and colors attract bees and butterflies. There is kinship, affinity, rapport, sharing, harmony, and empathy and thus a perfect working order in nature and between mother and child.

What is to be done happens naturally without the need for rewards, and use of motivational strategies. Absence of greed and vested interests; and existence of unconditional acceptance, cooperation and accord are marks of communion, and when we commune we feel love and can express spontaneously, naturally and aptly.

There is disharmony in the Social world.

It is unrealistic to expect the social world to be in communion. We love our own family, but dislike the neighbor's family, because they are below our status. At work, we hate the boss because he pushes us to work harder; we are jealous of a more competent colleague, or we simply do not like the person who sits next to us.

Sometimes we are in conflict with another race, caste or creed because of differences in beliefs. The reasons for absence of love in a society are many: and when there is no love, we do not have its language and we cannot commune. As a result, we say wrong things, express our self inappropriately, and cause disharmony and unhappiness.

Communication can help us to commune - to love.

When we practice and use communication skills like listening, asking, empathy, giving feedback, and speaking articulately we can understand and be understood better. We can peel layers of anger, arrogance, hatred, and jealousy that cover us. We become less mysterious to each other and begin to commune- we begin to love.

The art of communication is to learn the language of love- and loving leads to communion - the end result is harmony.
